Byron Center High School Marching Band members are state champions after finishing in the top spot at the competition held Nov. 1 at Ford Field in Detroit.
The marching band earned a score of 92.4 in the Flight III division to earn first place. Band members also took the Caption Award for Best Music Performance.
Paige Heyboer, a junior in color guard this year recalls the experience:
“We were the last band to perform that night so we just went straight into the stands and sat there till after awards. We all were just really happy after we performed but it was 11:00 pm so we all were a little tired, too. But when they started to announce the placements we all just grabbed each others hands and we didn’t really know why.
Then when they announced the second place and it wasn’t us we all just sate there speechless, when they announced us being fist we listed our hands up and screamed and hugged each other and we all were crying and it was a very memorable moment for us all.”
