Last night, all across the country football games were being played. The grass was freshly cut and the yard lines and hash marks were chalked in care. Football players strapped on their pads and helmets and hit the fields to face off in season openers. Fans filed into stadiums, large and small, filled in the best seats and cheered for their home teams. There’s nothing like the start of football season!
With all that comes, the thing we love best…Marching Band!
The bands have been preparing as much, if not more, as the football teams. Some for weeks, working hard in the extreme heat to get ready for opening night.
“It’s so hot out here today.
I close my eyes for a few seconds. I’m thinking of a cool, refreshing water break.
It’s the third day of two grueling weeks of all-out torture. It’s voluntary, though. We all signed up for this. Not a single one of us wants to quit. The sticky August heat makes it hard to breathe. I’m working hard to keep my elbows out and arms high. Hours of holding my trumpet at the proper horn angle are beginning to take a toll, my arms are on fire.
Even though I’m wearing a lot of sunscreen, I can still feel the sun baking my skin. My chops feel like mush. The muscles around my mouth and lips are getting fatigued. My feet are tired. It feels like I’ve been marching around on this field forever, but it’s only been hours.
This is band camp.” (Excerpt from Just Rigby: A Marching Band Story on Wattpad – early chapters of our book called Because)
Learning their drill, learning their music, and getting ready to create a fun-filled and exciting atmosphere from the stands. They felt the excitement of stepping out onto the field for the first time in front of a stadium of people cheering them on.
Some may look at half time as the time to take a restroom break or to grab a hotdog, but we see it as OUR time. It’s the time the marching band shines.
All over the country as football teams duked it out on the gridiron, marching bands were playing fan favorites in the stands and taking the field during half time to entertain the audience.
