Every year students across Mississippi participate in a two-step audition process to make this band. In the middle of June, the band of about 150 students go to camp at a local community college for a week to learn a parade routine, parade music, as well as an extensive concert and lobby show.
After the week of what the students have lovingly deemed “Hell Week,” everyone packs up and goes on a trip to the Lions International Convention to compete in the Parade of Nations. The band has won the International Championship for the past four years in a row with their first win going all the way back to 1951. This year it was held in Fukuoka, Japan, and last year it was held in Honolulu, Hawaii.
This is the 32nd year the band has won this international competition. Next year the convention will be held in Chicago, Illinois, as it will be the 100th anniversary of Lions International.
